Gitwangak Battle Hill National Historic Site

In March 2006, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) approved a name change for this national historic site. The name was formerly Kitwanga Fort and the new name is Gitwangak Battle Hill. "Gitwangak" is the correct Gitsenimx language spelling of the name of the First Nation that built the fort in the 18th century. "Battle Hill" is the name many locals use to describe the site. While a fort once stood at the site, this term is misleading as the fort was burned to the ground some time in the nineteenth century. Both the Gitwangak Band and the Kitwanga Community Association were consulted prior to the name change being submitted to the HSMBC.
