Ladies' Lookout is the highest point of land on Signal Hill. Legend has it that the women of St. John's came here to watch for ships carrying their sons, husbands and lovers, which inspired the hill's name. The earliest military defenses and signal stations were built on and around Ladies' Lookout. On September 15, 1762, British soldiers won a decisive engagement against French forces for the possession of St. John's during the Battle of Signal Hill, right at the summit of this hill.

Some sections of the trail are steep or have an irregular surface.
