Lock Tales - Kilmarnock

Transcript

[Introduction shot with lock master Scott]

Hi I’m Scott, and I’m the acting lock master on the Rideau Canal.

[Aerial footage of boats entering the lock]

Here at Kilmarnock were fortunate enough to have a few very unique characteristics.

[Lock filled with boaters]

The first, is the low level of lift that Kilmarnock Lockstation has.

[Boaters waiting to transfer through]

We have the lowest recorded lock lift on the Ridea Canal, measured at just over 2 feet.

[Interview shot with lock master Scott]

This gives us the opportunity to move boats through in a very quick manor.

With the average lock lasting less then 10 minutes, including the swinging of the bridge.

[Aerial footage of boats in the lock]

[Boats exiting the lockstation]

The bridge is manually pushed across, due to the low level of height clearance over the lock chamber and the position of the bridge midway across the chamber.

[Staff pushing the swing bridge]

[Overhead of swing bridge operating]

The bridge is swung for the majority of the boats going through, in order to give them clearance.

[Staff communicating with boaters]

A lot of visitors to the site are fascinated with the fact that the bridge is manually pushed with no other electrical or mechanical means.

[Interview shot with lock master Scott]

Majority of our equipment I’m sure has been replaced at some point in time, but for the most part our processes and the way we do things, still replicates early days of the canal.

[Employee opening valves]

Here at Kilmarnock everything is manual from our gates, our water control devices, to our swing bridge itself.

[Interview shot with lock master Scott]

Kilmarnock is a very rural setting which makes it very peaceful and quiet.

We do have some docking on site, although in a limited amount.

[Boaters tied off on dock]

[Aerial shot of boats mooring]

We are a favourite spot for picnickers to come and enjoy the afternoon, and a favourite spot for the local fisherman, with an abundance of fish species in the area.

[Boaters exiting the lock waving to staff]

[Interview shot with lock master Scott]

A typical day at Kilmarnock Lockstation on the Rideau Canal involves moving boats both up and down in the system for a majority of the day.

[Lockmaster assisting boats off the dock]

Generally in the afternoon we see a little bit of a quiet period.

[Aerial shot of the site grounds]

Which gives the staff an opportunity to look after all the grounds maintenance, any projects that may be on going, painting, that kid of thing.

[Workers opening valves]

It also gives us the time to interact with any boaters that might be staying on site, or any land based visitors.

A final item that is very recognizable at the Kilmarnock Lockstation is our defensible lock masters house.

[Aerial shot of lock masters house]

Built originally, first floor in 1841, the second floor was added around the 1890 period.

[Front view of lock masters house]

[Parks memorabilia]

And functioned as the residence for the onsite lock master.

[Inside view of lock masters house]

Today the residence functions as a office, a workshop and some staff areas but also has a small area with some canal memorabilia in the front end.

If you’re in the Kilmarnock Lockstation area and you have an afternoon to watch the water roll by, or feel like wetting the line. Stop in and say hello, the staff would love to show you around.
