John Sparrow David Thompson, of Scottish and Irish extraction, grew up in a house formerly on this site. An outstanding lawyer, he began his political career as Attorney-General of Nova Scotia (1878-1882) in the Conservative government of S.H. Holmes. Briefly Premier before the provincial election of 1882, Thompson was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia shortly thereafter. He re-entered political life at the federal level in 1885 and was named Minister of Justice in the Macdonald government. In 1892 he became Prime Minister of Canada. He died suddenly at Windsor Castle.
