A father of Confederation, Adam George Archibald was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, and educated at Pictou Academy. He subsequently studied law, entered politics in 1851 and became a cabinet minister in 1856. As Liberal leader in Nova Scotia he supported Confederation and was appointed first Secretary of State for Canada. He served as Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and the North-West Territories (1870-72) and of Nova Scotia (1873- 83). In 1884 he was named Chairman of the Board of Governors of Dalhousie University. He was knighted in 1885. He died in Truro.
