Born at Freetown, P.E.I., 22nd May, 1854. Educated in the Maritime Provinces, the British Isles and Europe. Professor in Acadia, 1880-2, Dalhousie, 1882-6, Cornell, 1886- 92; President of Cornell University, 1892-1921. Author of several philosophical treatises. President of the first United States Philippine Commission and joint-author of its report to Congress, 1900. Minister to Greece and Montenegro, 1912; to China 1921-4; Ambassador to Germany, 1925-9. Died in New York, 12th August, 1942.
