Born in Mitchell, Ontario, Morenz joined the Montréal Canadiens in 1923. An immediate success, he helped the team win three Stanley Cups. He won the league scoring championship twice and the Hart Trophy three times. As age slowed the "Stratford Streak" he was sold to Chicago and later traded to the New York Rangers. Re-acquired by the Canadiens in 1936, Morenz made a remarkable comeback before a freak hockey accident ended his career. He died in Montréal of complications resulting from the injury. Probably the most exciting player of his day, Morenz was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945.
