Alexander McPhail was born in Paisley, Ontario and came west in 1899. As a farmer, livestock dealer and employee of the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture he was active in promoting political and economic organization for the prairie farmer. Elected secretary of the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association in 1922, he worked tirelessly for the creation of a Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, of which he became first president in 1924. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Central Sales Agency (1924), designed to handle the crops of the three prairie provinces. He died in Regina.
