Prolific church decorator and easel painter, Ozias Leduc produced some of the most evocative paintings in Canadian art. He found inspiration in late-19th-century Symbolism and in his immediate surroundings in Saint-Hilaire, where he was born. His mastery of colour and light transcends mere representation, enveloping his religious themes, still lifes, portraits, and landscapes in a spiritual light. Ozias Leduc had a profound impact on Québécois and Canadian painting in the 20th century, influencing, in particular, the works of artists Paul-Émile Borduas, Jean-Paul Riopelle, and other Automatistes.
