Operations undertaken by German submarines in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf between 1942 and 1944 brought the perils of the Second World War home to Canada. U-boats penetrating coastal waters sank some twenty warships and merchant vessels transporting combatants and supplies to war zones overseas. Through the combined efforts of the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and coast-watchers on the shore, the enemy was eventually repelled and the inland waters secured.
