Born at South Stukeley, Quebec, Lawrence came with his father to Fort Vermilion, N.W.T., in 1886. Merchant, freighter and farmer, he took an active role in nearly every aspect of life in the region, gaining a reputation as friend of the Indian, road builder, magistrate, and patron of education. Epitomizing the strength, enterprise, and versatility of the best pioneer tradition, he was known as the "Emperor of the Peace". Together with his wife and their fifteen children he helped to push the frontier of agriculture and community life hundreds of miles northward. He died at Peace River, Alberta.
