High Wave Hazard Advisory issued for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Large Waves & Strong Currents

December 7, 2020

UCLUELET, December 6, 2020 – Parks Canada has issued a wave hazard advisory, notifying the public to use extra caution on beaches, shorelines and coastal waters in and around Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on Monday, December 7, 2020.

During this time period, combined seas are expected to reach up to 6 meters. Waves can create conditions that can overwhelm surfers, swimmers, stand-up paddleboard users, and kayakers. The force of large waves can push water users into rocks or hold them underwater for extended periods of time. Large waves often also contribute to other water hazards, for example, a large swell will likely increase rip current’s strength.

Visitors are advised to avoid water activities and to use extreme caution if entering the water.  Shoreline users are advised to stay well back from the water’s edge especially along rocky shorelines and islands.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve staff will continue to monitor conditions. Depending on the severity of the beach flooding, select beach parking lots and beach areas in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve may be temporarily closed to protect visitor safety. Any updates can be found online and on the LED screens in place at four locations within the park reserve.
