Warning: Bears frequenting the Jasper Townsite

Why:

Bears frequenting area and showing human food seeking behaviour.

To minimize the potential of a bear encounter:

  • Be vigilant: watch for bears and try to avoid them.
  • Make noise: alert bears of your presence.
  • Children: supervise when they are playing outdoors.
  • Pets: keep domestic animals under control; leashed or under appropriate confinement.

Attractants:

  • Do not leave attractants unattended for any length of time.
  • Secure garbage, recycling, human and pet food in bear proof containers. Remove bird feeders, fruit on trees/shrubs including fruit on the ground.
  • Follow proper procedures when disposing of freezers and freezers (white goods).
  • Clean up food spills.
  • Keep doors (home or garage) closed.

To assist wildlife staff when managing bears, please leave the immediate area because your presence may affect the bears behaviour and direction of travel.
