What an Inuit Protected Area/national marine conservation area in the Torngat Area of Interest means
The protection of the Torngat Area of Interest (Torngat-AOI) carries incredible meaning for many people. In early 2024, the Nunatsiavut Government and the Government of Canada completed a feasibility assessment—an important step toward the lasting preservation of the area. Makivvik joined the project steering committee in May 2024 and will be involved in the negotiations phase.
Conserving this area means Canada takes one more step towards achieving its goal of protecting 30% of the country’s land and water by 2030. If established, a new national marine conservation area in the Torngat-AOI would represent and protect culturally significant Inuit heritage locations, geologically significant features, and important ecological habitats.
