Monseigneur de Saint-Vallier, the second bishop of Québec, was a determined defender of the faith, rights and immunities of the Church. A man of great energy, he organized religious life in the parishes to his own rigorous standards, and travelled to the remotest corners of his immense diocese. He published a Catéchisme and a Rituel which long formed the basis of religious and pastoral education in Quebec. Known for his charity toward the poor, he founded the Hôpital Général de Québec on 30 October 1692.
