Gilles Hocquart came to New France in 1729 as financial commissary and acting intendant. From 1731 until his recall in 1748 he served as intendant of New France, and contributed greatly to the commercial development of the colony. Under his administration its economy was diversified to include such industries as Les forges du Saint-Maurice and ship building at Québec, while the export of goods to France increased significantly. Unfortunately many of his Canadian projects were short-lived. On his return to France he served for many years as the intendant of Brest .
