Candidates for national significance status
If you think an archaeological site deserves consideration as a site of national historic importance, you can apply to have the site nominated. However, the site in question must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- There is substantive evidence that a particular site is unique; or
- The site is a good example of a particular culture or of a specific phase in the evolution of a cultural sequence; or
- The archaeological site provides a good, typical example; or
- The site meets the general criteria of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) relating to the selection of historic sites for national recognition.
Note that the Guidelines for Evaluating Shipwrecks of National Significance in Canada could be useful in preparing requests for designation of this particular type of archaeological resource. Their objective is to increase the profile of different attributes or qualities of wrecks that could be of national historical significance.
