Archaeological excavations at Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux

An archaeological excavation will take place at the Dufferin Terrace in Quebec City in support of the future presentation (Phase 1) of the Saint- Louis Forts and Châteaux NHSC. The excavation serves as a mitigation measure before the installation of a new wooden platform infrastructure and a roof to cover the vestiges under the Dufferin Terrace.
The objectives of the project consist of completing the archaeological investigation started in 1995 by collecting:
- More information on Saint-Louis Forts military structures dating to Champlain’s occupation.
- More information on the two Saint-Louis Châteaux and their outbuildings.
- Objects associated to the forts and châteaux.

In order to accomplish these goals the team will continue to record the vestiges related to the forts and châteaux. They will also record the levels of occupation and collect artifacts associated with daily life and the military presence in the forts.
