Signal Hill National Historic Site
Signal Hill was designated in 1951 as a National Historic Site because of its significance to the military and communications history of Canada. Since then, Signal Hill (and specifically Cabot Tower) have come to symbolize the historic past of the city of St. John’s.

Communication: flags, cables and de-coders
Because of its strategic location and views, Signal Hill played an important role in military signaling from 1704-1870.
Defence of the narrows
Signal Hill and the south side of the Narrows were important parts of St. John's defence systems from the 1640s to the Second World War.
Cabot tower
Built between 1897 and 1900 as a commemorative project, Cabot Tower is now an iconic landmark of the city of St. John's.
