Signal Hill National Historic Site

Overlooking the entrance to St. John's harbour, Signal Hill National Historic Site is a local and national symbol with a wealth of cultural resources and landscape features that reflect its vast history. Signal Hill was designated as a national historic site because of its importance in Canada’s defense and communications history.

With panoramic views of the city and the Atlantic Ocean, Signal Hill is a popular attraction in St. John's, where you’ll be swept away by seasonal appearances of whales and icebergs.

In the summer months, there are guided tours, special events, and immersive programs for visitors that celebrate the centuries of military and communications history of the site.

Quick facts

  • Signal Hill and the south side of the Narrows were important parts of St. John's defence systems from the 1640s to the Second World War.
  • Built between 1897 and 1901, Cabot Tower is the site’s most iconic building and one of Canada’s top landmarks.
  • Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless communication in 1901 at Signal Hill.
