Artist's interpretation by Loretta Gould
The Fall Season
The Mi'kmaq have the longest relationship with settlers on Turtle Island and we still continue to speak our language and practice our traditions – We continue to protect all in our territory and all who live in our territory.
The Spring Season
The spring season teaches us of new life coming on Mother Earth. Just like the Caribou, we move in herds to walk among mother Earth to see one another again as the snow is gone and the trees start budding again.
The Winter Season
The winter season comes. We get closer to welcome the winter spirit – The Tiam (Moose) reminds us of the virtue of patience when we are fishing during the cold months and to keep fishing when times are uncertain.
The Summer Season
Kluskap taught us how to survive in every season, about the importance of water and how we all must all share it – the four-legged animals, the winged animals, the swimming animals, and the two-legged animals. We made a sacred promise to all four beings to take care of one another as the MMIW is among us in Turtle Island. It's a reminder of this teaching to protect the life givers on Mother Earth.
