Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
Facilities and services available during your visit to the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site.
Accessibility
The grounds, main floor of the Cavalier Building, Army Museum, most of the exhibits, and washrooms are all wheelchair accessible.
Wheelchairs and walkers are available in the Visitor Information Centre.
Accessible parking
Accessible parking is located at the front entrance/exit near the front entrance kiosk.
Service animals
Service animals are welcome, in the company of their handlers. Please keep service animals on a leash or harness during your visit.
Entrance/Exit
There are two ways to enter and exit the Halifax Citadel:
- The front entrance/exit is located on Southeast portion of the Citadel facing the Old Town Clock and Brunswick Street.
- The back entrance/exit is located on west side of the Citadel facing Ahern Avenue and Bell Road.
Parking

Parking is accessible from the back entrance/exit and located in the ditch or lower level of the Halifax Citadel.
There is an on-site paid parking lot for up to 80 cars located inside the fort’s West Ditch.
Buses and RVs
There are designated areas for tour buses and recreational vehicles.

Electric vehicle charging stations
Open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
Located in the on-site paid parking lot.

Elevators
Elevator to ramparts
There is a self-service elevator located behind the Cavalier Building near the back entrance/exit. Use this elevator to visit upper level attractions.
Cavalier building elevator
There is an elevator located on the main floor inside the Visitor Information Centre. Use this elevator to access the Army Museum located on the second floor.
Coffee Bar and Parks Canada Perfect Picnic
The Halifax Citadel Coffee Bar is located in the historic Cavalier Building, next to the historic Soldiers’ Library.
Stop in for refreshments or a light meal! Or choose to take your lunch out and find your perfect picnic place within the walls of the fort or on the grassy hillside. No pre-ordering required.
First Aid
First aid is located in the security office, across from the Cavalier Building near the front entrance/exit.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is located in the security office, across from the Cavalier Building near the front entrance/exit.

Security is located across from the Cavalier Building near the front entrance/exit.
Washrooms
Washrooms are located across from the Cavalier Building near the front entrance/exit.
Water fountain and water bottle filling station
Water fountain and water bottle filling station is located in the hallway near the public washrooms.
Wi-Fi hotspot
Wif-Fi is available on the Parade Grounds within the walls of the Halifax Citadel.
Army Museum
The Army Museum is located on the second floor of the Cavalier Building.
The Army Museum is open during the same hours as the Halifax Citadel and admission is included with your entry fee to the historic site.

Meeting and event rental spaces
The Halifax Citadel can accommodate a variety of gatherings year-round: business meetings, galas, weddings, concerts, receptions, photography, even product launches or retirement luncheons. More information
Regimental Shop – Souvenirs, gifts, and more!
The Regimental Shop is open daily from May to October and is located on the ground floor of the Cavalier Building.
Step inside the Halifax Citadel Regimental Shop and you’ll find historical souvenirs and locally sourced gifts. Find a treasure trove of items celebrating Halifax’s proud military heritage, from t-shirts and ornaments to books and postcards.
The Halifax Citadel Society runs the Regimental Shop, and proceeds from all sales support the living history program at the Halifax Citadel.
