THE RIDEAU CANAL NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE WELCOMES YOU TO COME CELEBRATE CANADA DAY WITH PARKS CANADA

Issued: June 30, 2020

SMITHS FALLS, ONTARIO June 30, 2020 – Being in nature provides important physical and mental health benefits. Going outdoors is a great way to maintain health and wellness, so long as everyone follows physical distancing practices.

This Canada Day, Parks Canada is pleased to welcome visitors to celebrate the incredible beauty and natural heritage of Canada on the Rideau Canal. Lockage for recreational boaters is free of charge on Canada Day.

The health and safety of visitors, employees, and all Canadians is of the utmost importance. Parks Canada will be following the advice of public health experts and implementing measures for cleaning, hygiene, and physical distancing at all places open for visitation.

Parks Canada is asking Canadians to be cautious and conservative in their use of these places, to observe travel restrictions, to respect the guidance of public health experts, and to make every effort to flatten the curve and keep one another safe. Visitors should leave no trace and dispose of it by using appropriate garbage containers or take their waste home.

Heritage buildings at national historic sites remain closed and many visitor centres will be closed or partially closed until further notice. Parks Canada will not be offering Canada Day interpretation programming, events or group activities.

This year’s national Canada Day virtual celebrations and activities – hosted by Canadian Heritage – give Canadians across the country an opportunity to connect and unite, celebrate our sense of belonging, reflect on our country’s cultural diversity and promote inclusion, represent Canadian artistic excellence and help evoke national healing through moving stories and Canadian culture.

The Parks Canada website provides detailed information on what locations are open, what visitors can expect, how to prepare for a visit and what services may be available. It also provides advice on how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while at Parks Canada places, including guidance on physical distancing, hygiene and other safety measures. Visitors are asked to plan ahead by checking the website before they travel.
