Developing the management plan

Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site

The new management plan for the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site was recently tabled in Parliament.  The plan was developed through public consultation and based on input from local residents and organizations, visitors, stakeholders, partners, and Indigenous communities of the Sault Ste. Marie area. Through this management plan, Parks Canada is meeting its promise to protect and share Canada’s cultural heritage, while also providing an opportunity for Canadians to experience and discover our diverse history in new and exciting ways.

Taking stock

Management planning provides the opportunity for Parks Canada to take stock of a site and set a course for the future. We have completed an assessment of Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, including the condition of its cultural resources and contemporary assets, as well as visitor experiences, external support and Indigenous relations.

Consider the possibilities

The evaluation has helped us identify issues and opportunities for improvement and change. Our efforts will be focused on three main areas:

  • Rehabilitation and revitalisation of infrastructure to build the foundation for the site’s future;
  • Strengthening relationships with First Nation and Métis partners to better tell the story of the site; and
  • Enhancing the experience at the site to increase visitation and create a vibrant community space.
