Hike or bike the trails to Huron's edge
Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site
Four great nature trails (Map, PDF, 0.3 MB) wind through the forest surrounding Fort St. Joseph. The trails vary in length so whether you have 20 or 90 minutes, you’ll be able to explore the trail system, learning about Fort St. Joseph and its surroundings along the way.
The Rains Point Trail is 0.5 km and is wheelchair accessible. The trail winds through the forest, eventually connecting to an old road leading to the site of an 1837 settlement founded by Major Rains. The buildings are gone but the lilac bushes, rosebushes and grapevines planted by their owners are still there, near a limestone beach on the shore of Lake Huron.
The Cemetery Trail begins at a burial ground containing graves from 1796 – 1812, and on through a mixed hardwood and softwood forest typical of St. Joseph Island. The loop trail is 2 km long.
The 1.4 km LaPointe Point Trail passes the site of the temporary fort built to house soldiers working on Fort St. Joseph.
Finally, the Voyaguer Trail, a 0.4 km loop, leads from the fort ruins through a cedar forest to a cobble beach.
Each trail offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy the stunning lake views and serene wilderness that surround Fort St. Joseph.
Our trails are great for hikers and cyclists alike. Stop by the Visitor Centre for more information on the trails and trail conditions.
