Dressed for Adventure!
Parks Canada is offering a free introduction to paddling at Lachine Canal National Historic Site’s Hangar 1825 throughout summer. Parks Canada certified instructors will be there to teach you the basics of canoeing. This fully accessible activity will help you learn how to handle a canoe in a safe environment.
Interested? Wondering how to prepare for this unforgettable experience in the heart of downtown? Read on for more on recommended attire. That way, you’ll be ready for anything!
Dress for the weather!
Outdoor activities take place—you guessed it—outside! Make sure you’re dressed for the weather so you can participate in your chosen sport safety and comfortably.
Clothing choices should account for sun, possibly getting wet, wind and any expected precipitation, among other things.
It’s recommended that you carry weather protection when participating in outdoor activities. Remember that the weather can change quickly, and it’s always better to be prepared for anything so that you can make the most of your outdoor experience. Getting unintentionally soaked is never fun!
Clothing made from synthetic fabric (polyester, polyamide, spandex, acrylic, etc.) is highly recommended because it’s stretchy, wicks away perspiration and dries quickly. Jeans, cotton or other clothing you’d associated more with “city” activities don’t allow for a good range of motion for an activity like canoeing, in addition to retaining moisture and water.
So, what if it’s nice, warm and sunny out? Don’t forget your hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen!
Fun tip: light-coloured, covering clothing provides additional sun protection. Also, because of their polymer structure, synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, spandex and acrylic provide better UV protection than natural fibers like wool, cotton or linen.
What if it’s overcast, windy and rainy? When it’s overcast or rainy, it’s recommended that you wear a waterproof windbreaker with a hood and that you bring along something warm to wear (e.g. fleece) in case the temperature suddenly drops.
With these few recommendations, you’re ready for adventure! On your marks, get set, paddle!
