Charles de Beauharnois

Born in 1671, Beauharnois joined the French Navy at the age of 20. He spent most of his life at sea. He even took part in an expedition to find the mouth of the Mississippi. In 1726, Beauharnois was awarded the position of Governor General in the colony.

As a military leader, Beauharnois tackled the problem of smuggling with the help of soldiers. On the one hand, illegal traffic compromises legal trade with the French East India Company. On the other, the Governor must maintain the alliances with the Indigenous Nations. He must also try not to overly displease the population ot the colony, which appreciates smuggled goods.
