Gilles Hocquart

Enrolled at a very youg age in the administration of the French Navy, Hocquart received a comprehensive training giving him a sound knowledge of maritime transport, trade and ports management. Through his influential family and his reputation as an efficient administrator, he was nominated as intendant of New France in 1729.

During his tenure, Hocquart oversaw the economic development of the colony. He supported agriculture and industry. However, many business people preferred to invest in fur trading and smuggling, activities that were much more profitable. Hocquart also ensured the maintenance of public order and organized the fight against illegal trading.
