Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site

Let our knowledgeable staff help share the history of settler homesteading in the area, agriculture and rural life, and important connections to the land through dynamic tours and hands-on activities.

Education program

Interpreters will be using a variety of techniques to deliver messages: period activities, demonstrations, animated roles, skits, or non-period learning activities. The activities are aimed at the students, but teachers and chaperones can join in, too! Activities are intended to be educational and fun.

Every group will be greeted by an interpreter and receive an orientation upon arrival.

Farm it, maybe!

Pick up your wagon at the store, fill it with supplies and venture west. What you choose to take and do will determine if you have what it takes to be a farmer in the 1900’s. Will you end up with a homestead, or have enough supplies to make it through another winter?

Fees

Participating in a customized learning program, tailored for your curriculum needs and guided by an experienced interpreter will give students an experience they won’t soon forget.

Enhanced program fees must be paid upon arrival. Cash, cheques, credit cards, and/or debit cards are accepted. Cheques are made payable to "The Receiver General for Canada".

How to book your visit

Thank-you for considering a visit to Motherwell Homestead for your school group.

Please have the following information ready when you call or email the site:
  • Name of program
  • Teachers' names (all names if multiple classes plan to visit together)
  • School name and contact information
  • Number of students and grade level
  • Approximate number of adults
  • Date (Select your top 2 preferences)
  • Language: Request service in English, French, or a mixture of both official languages.
  • Special needs: Is there anything we need to be aware of to ensure a smooth visit for your group?

Once your booking request is processed, you will receive a confirmation via email. If both your preferred and optional dates are unavailable, we will reach out to you to arrange an alternate date.

If you need to make changes to your reservation, please call the site as soon as possible.

Trip preparation

Please have participants bring a water bottle, walking shoes, hat, and to dress for the weather. Other items that may be needed are bug spray and sunscreen. Our tours operate rain or shine!

Please arrive a few minutes before you're scheduled to begin. Know how long your travel time is and how to get here before you leave. If you get delayed along the way, please phone the site to let us know. We'll try to accommodate the changes in your schedule. Please, be aware that we are unable to change the schedule for other groups if your group is delayed.

Gift Shop

The Friends of the Motherwell gift shop offers souvenirs for your group to pick up at the end of your tour. Please contact the Friends of the Motherwell (Motherwellfriends@gmail.com) well in advance of your tour to discuss. If your group would like time to browse the gift shop, don’t hesitate to discuss with the guide upon arrival.

Food Services

“Jam Pail” lunches are available for purchase from the Friends of the Motherwell Homestead by pre-order only. Please request at time of booking.

Picnic Areas

There is a sheltered picnic area with picnic tables and playground beside the visitor centre. Open fires, barbeques, hibachis, etc. are not permitted. Please don't feed farm animals or wildlife.
