Area Closure: Jasper National Park, except for defined areas and transportation corridors. September 27, 2024

What

Pursuant to subsection 36(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the following area is closed to all traffic and travel by order of the Superintendent:

Jasper National Park, except for:

  • Highway 16
  • Icefields Parkway (93N)
  • The Columbia Icefield area
  • Miette Road and Miette Hot Springs area
  • The Jasper town site
  • The Lakes Loop and Old Fort Point
  • Pyramid Lake area
  • Snaring Road/Celestine Road

Where

Jasper National Park is closed, with exception of the following defined areas and transportation corridors:

Highway 16 Corridor: travel on the highway is permitted. Use of frontcountry facilities, such as day use areas, highway pullouts, frontcountry trails, and Jasper Lake and Talbot Lake is permitted unless indicated as closed. All backcountry access is closed to the public.

Icefields Parkway: travel on the Icefields Parkway (93N) is permitted. Day use areas including Athabasca Falls, as well as pullouts and roadside facilities, are open unless indicated as closed. Frontcountry trails are open from the Jasper-Banff boundary until the Goats and Glaciers pullout unless indicated as closed. Frontcountry campgrounds are closed.

The Columbia Icefield area: the Icefields Centre, surrounding frontcountry trails and day use areas are open for use. Backcountry areas to the west of the Icefields Centre are open for alpine recreation, however use of backcountry trails and camping remains closed to the public. All frontcountry campgrounds (including Icefields RV, Wilcox, and Icefields Tent) remain closed.

Miette Road and Miette Hot Springs area: travel up Miette Road to Miette Hot Springs and use of day use areas and frontcountry trails (e.g. Sulphur Skyline, Source of the Springs) is permitted. All backcountry access is closed to the public. Miette Campground remains closed to the public.

The Jasper town site: Access to the Jasper town site is permitted from Highway 16. However, the town of Jasper has limited services and attractions. Sections of the townsite remain closed to ensure safety, protect residents’ privacy, and support recovery efforts. Some trails and facilities adjacent to the town site are closed to the public.

The Lakes Loop and Old Fort Point: Access is permitted to roads and day use areas at Old Fort Point, Lake Annette, Lake Edith and Lake Beauvert. Official trails are open for use in this area unless signed or indicated as closed. Use of the Athabasca River is permitted downstream from Old Fort Point.

Pyramid Lake area: Access to Pyramid Lake Road is permitted. Trail use on the Pyramid Bench is permitted. The lakes and day use areas are open at Pyramid and Patricia lakes.

Snaring Road/Celestine Road: Snaring Road and Celestine Road are open for public access as far as Moberly Homestead. Snaring Campground remains closed.

Why

To ensure public safety as Parks Canada continues to respond to wildfire activity and ongoing hazards.

Penalty

Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25 000.
