Effective dates:

What: 

Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the following activity is prohibited by Order of the Superintendent: except for the designated official trails, roads and areas outlined in sections a, b and c below. 

Where: 

a. Bicycling and entry with a bicycle are permitted on the following official trails:

• All official trails within the Three Valley Confluence (TVC; see map and appendix 1) with the exception of:
  
  • Trail 1 Old Fort Point trail from the top of the wooden stairs to the junction with trail Trail 1a and 9;
  • Trail 4d Lake Annette Loop;
  • Trails 5 and 5a Whistlers trail above Fast Tracks junction and Whistlers Summit;
  • Trail 7 Maligne Canyon trail from 1^st bridge to 5^th bridge and Trail 7f parking lot to 2^nd bridge;
  • Trail 10a Flower Loop trail;
  • Trail 17 Pyramid Island. 

• Trail 34 and 34a - Miette Campground Trail and Spur to Punchbowl Falls
• Trail 72 - Wabasso Campground Trail
• Trail 100 - Signal Fire Road to the end of the road 
• Trail 115 - Athabasca Pass Trail to Simon Creek 
• Trail 122 - Fryatt Valley Trail to Lower Fryatt Campground
• Trail 126 - Lower Sunwapta Falls to Athabasca Crossing and Spur Trail to Long Lake 
• Trail 132 - Poboktan Creek Trail to Waterfalls Campground
• Trail 139 - Jacques Lake Trailhead to the second Summit Lake
• Trail 150 - The portion of the North Boundary Trail between the Celestine Lake Trailhead and Rock Lake 
• Trail 151 and 152 - Celestine Lake and Devona Lookout trails
• Geraldine Fire Road to Geraldine parking lot, but not Geraldine Parking lot to Geraldine Lookout

b. From September 16 to May 14 at Valley of the Five Lakes, around lakes 2-4 between junctions with Trail 9b. Biking prohibited from May 15 through September 15 inclusive. 

c. Biking is allowed on all vehicle accessible roads - gated and ungated, except groomed winter trails on Highway 93A, Geraldine and Moab Lake Road, Pyramid Road, and roads within Wabasso and Whistlers Campground.

d. Biking is allowed on the frozen lakes and rivers in Jasper National Park which are accessible from roads or from the official trails listed in item a. above.

e. Using a pedal assist electric bike, as defined below, is permitted on all trails and areas mentioned in sections a, b and c above.

Parks Canada defines pedal assist e-bikes as follows: 

1. has steering handlebars and is equipped with pedals;
2. is designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground;
3. is capable of being propelled by muscular power only;
4. has one or more electric motors which have, singly or in combination, the following characteristics:
   a. it has a total power output rating of 500 W or less,
   b. power assistance immediately ceases when the muscular power ceases,
   c. it is incapable of providing further assistance when the bicycle attains a speed of 32 km/h on level ground,
5. is equipped with a safety mechanism that prevents the motor from being engaged before the bicycle attains a speed of 3 km/h.

Why: 

To reduce the conflicts between user groups and to protect and improve ecologically sensitive areas in Jasper National Park.

Please see attached map for the trails included within the Three Valley Confluence and official trails and permitted uses within Jasper National Park. 

Penalty:

It is an offence under the Canada National Parks Act to ride a bicycle or enter with a bicycle on the trails or areas not listed in this order. Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act: maximum penalty $25 000..
