Visitor centre construction
Waterton Lakes National Park
Parks Canada is pleased to announce that construction of Waterton Lakes National Park’s new visitor centre is complete.
The visitor centre is a fun and engaging introduction into Waterton Lakes’ remarkable nature and culture. Open year round, the new facility includes modern interpretive exhibits, interpretive programming, and visitor information services. Exhibits highlight the area’s substantial biodiversity, unique landscapes and the forces of nature that shape them, including wind and wildfire.
“As cornerstones of Canada’s tourism industry, Parks Canada administered places are committed to providing visitors with high quality and meaningful visitor experiences, and this visitor centre is a shining example of that. This is a landmark project in Waterton Lakes National Park, and an investment in its future that will serve visitors for decades to come.”
The Honourable Steven Guilbeault
Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada
Sustainable infrastructure
Climate change impacts to Parks Canada-administered places are complex, and the Agency is committed to integrating climate change mitigation and adaptation actions into its work.
Design and interpretation
With an uncomplicated design, the use of natural materials is reflective of the craftsman style typical of Parks Canada buildings. Large, sturdy stone blocks contrast large windows celebrating majestic mountain views.
The visual look and feel of the interpretive design complements the architectural materials and textures - blending seamlessly into the environment of the site, ensuring a smooth transition between interior and exterior experiences.
Three structures, a main building, an administration building, and a public washroom building are all joined together by one roof. The three buildings bordering the plaza create a wind-sheltered space. This space also acts as an outdoor theatre for interpretive talks, events and performances.
Main theme: Convergence: “a meeting place”
Waterton Lakes National Park is a place of convergence - where steep mountains abruptly meet wind-swept prairie; distinct ecosystems intersect; diverse animals and plants mix; and people come together.
