Winter driving
Waterton Lakes National Park
Parks Canada is committed to maintaining roads for pedestrians and vehicles. Following a snowfall, roads around the park are maintained so that winter visitor experiences remain available, park operations can continue and emergency services can access the townsite.
Parks Canada’s maintenance objectives are:
- Highways 5 and 6
- Entrance Road
- Community primary streets
- Mount View Road
- Windflower Avenue
- Fountain Avenue
- Cameron Falls Drive
- Harebell Road
- Clematis Avenue
- Akamina Parkway and Chief Mountain Highway (maintained to Waterton Valley Viewpoint until January)
- Remaining community streets
During extreme weather events, staff may need to focus on maintaining the highways and entrance roads before starting on townsite streets.
Akamina Parkway is open to vehicles to Little Prairie Day Use Area. The road will be plowed as necessary and morning closures are expected, to give snowplows the space to operate safely. 511 Alberta is the best place to check current parkway status.
