WHAT: Pursuant to Section 7(1) of the Canada National Parks Act General Regulations, pedestrian and non-motorized through-travel on the Trans-Canada Highway through Glacier National Park for the purposes of fundraising is restricted and subject to a Special Event Permit.

WHERE: Glacier National Park, British Columbia.

WHY:  The Trans-Canada Highway through Glacier National Park is part of the national transportation corridor, with very heavy use by the commercial transportation industry. The highway crosses more than 100 avalanche paths and passes through five snowsheds. During the winter months, avalanche control using Howitzers can begin at any time, day or night, without warning.

Pedestrian travel for the purposes of fundraising (walking, running, cycling and other forms of pedestrian or non-motorized travel) must meet the conditions of a Special Event Permit, including:

           -           The Special Event must include a support vehicle with flashing lights travelling immediately behind the participant(s),

           -           The participant(s)must travel in the support vehicle through the snowsheds, and,

           -           From November 15 to May 1, the participant(s) must travel in the support vehicle when crossing the signed Avalanche Area – No Stopping zones on the highway.

PENALTY: Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act. Maximum penalty $25 000.
