Travelling to Haida Gwaii

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site

Haida Gwaii, which translates to Islands of the People, is an archipelago approximately 100 kilometres off the northern British Columbia coast. Gwaii Haanas, which translates to Islands of Beauty, is a protected area in the southern one third of Haida Gwaii.

Travelling by sea

BC Ferries

BC Ferries offers year-round service from Prince Rupert to Skidegate Landing, which is on the southern end of Graham Island, on a seven-hour crossing. An Inside Passage ferry runs between Port Hardy (northern Vancouver Island) and Prince Rupert. Reservations are essential.

Small Craft Harbours

Facilities for recreational and commercial vessels are available in Daajing Giids, Sandspit, Port Clements and Masset. Facilities include electrical hookups and fresh water. Sandspit Harbour has a holding tank, pump out station and showers.


Getting around Haida Gwaii

Getting around Haida Gwaii is easy with your own vehicle, but there is limited public transportation.

The communities of Daajing Giids, Hlaagilda Skidegate, Tlell, Port Clements, Masset and Old Massett are located on Graham Island. K’il Kun, Sandspit and the K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay, Sandspit Airport are on Moresby Island. A car and passenger ferry connects the two islands with a 20-minute trip.
