Caribou Cabin

Mount Revelstoke National Park

December 1 2024 to April 30 2025

Mount Revelstoke National Park offers a unique winter opportunity for small groups or families to ski or snowshoe up the mountain and spend the night at Caribou Cabin. Bookings include exclusive use of the 6-bed cabin (3 bunk beds) nestled at around 1550 metres elevation on Mount Revelstoke, 1000 metres above the valley below. Enjoy the peaceful mountain setting and starry night skies (if the weather cooperates). Access to the cabin is an 8.8 km trip up the Summit Trail with the last 5 kilometres on the Meadows in the Sky Parkway at crossing 6. For those hardy folks, you can also wind your way up the mountain following the snowy Meadows in the Sky Parkway for 20 km to the cabin.

The cabin is set among subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce trees, giving its visitors an opportunity to experience the magical Columbia Mountains sunrises and sunsets from the solitude of the cabin or the Mount Revelstoke summit (6 km away). Overnight, there isn't a light visible on any horizon at the cabin and on clear nights, the Milky Way brightens the sky.

Caribou Cabin is a rustic log cabin operated by Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks. Make sure to pack what you need for a comfortable stay. Reservations are only available through the Revelstoke Administration Office, inquire from Monday to Friday during opening hours.

Option 1 (20 km): Park at the turnaround near the gate on the Meadows in the Sky Parkway, just before the entrance kiosk. Follow the road for 20 km as it switches back up the mountain. The cabin will be on your right.

Option 2 (8.8 km): Park at the Nels Nelsen parking lot From there, take the Summit Trail. Walk to the 6th road crossing, where you will turn right, following the road for 5km until you see the cabin on your right.

Note: The Trans-Canada Highway is the priority for snow removal. If it has recently snowed, snow removal may not yet have been completed on the lower Meadows in the Sky Parkway (below the kiosk) and the Nels Nelsen Road.

Safety
Cabin renters must be responsible for their own safety, ensuring they have the skills and experience necessary. They must be prepared for extreme weather conditions in mountainous terrain. Cell phone coverage is unavailable at the Cabin and unreliable in most areas of the park, an alternate means of communication is recommended. Cabin access requires route finding, first aid and backpacking skills, experience and equipment. Visit Avalanche Canada for more information.
Travelling in the backcountry in winter
The routes to the cabin are mostly through simple terrain, but there are some sections of avalanche terrain. Beyond the cabin towards the summit, there is more avalanche terrain. It is recommended that you bring avalanche safety gear, understand the risks of backcountry recreation, have experience travelling l in avalanche terrain and know how to self-rescue. Be aware that rescues, especially in winter, can take time. Be prepared to spend the night outside should something happen.
When venturing in avalanche terrain, you should:
  • Have an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe for every member of the group.
  • Check today's Avalanche Bulletin on Avalanche Canada to determine the current conditions.
  • Carefully plan your route using online resources, maps, guidebooks and information from Parks Canada.

Plan ahead, be prepared and always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
