Snowmobiling Safety

Your safety depends on you. Whether snowmobiling in the front or back country in Gros Morne National Park, snowmobilers need to know the risks. Up in the hills especially, the terrain can be challenging, the snow is deep, weather conditions can change suddenly, and there is limited cell phone coverage. Gros Morne’s backcountry is not a part of the provincial groomed trail system. There is a lot that can happen out there. That is why you need to be completely self-reliant.

• Make sure you are well equipped and ready for any emergency.
• Be prepared to extend your outing should it become necessary.
• Never travel alone and always let someone else know your travel plans.
• When travelling over ice, wear a flotation suit and carry ice picks.
• Hypothermia and frostbite are real risks, so be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
• Keep your machine well maintained. It’s safer for you, and better for the environment. Also, carry extra fuel and a tool kit for emergency repairs.
• Gros Morne National Park is a wilderness landscape. You require strong navigation skills with a map, compass, and GPS.
