Explore the exceptional ecology and world-significant geology with a Parks Canada interpreter guiding you through a landscape described as a “geologist’s dream”! The Tablelands of Gros Morne is one of the few places where the Earth’s mantle is revealed. Pushed in place as continents collided almost half a billion years ago, its orange weathered rock is from the middle layer of the Earth. Shaped by glaciers less than 15,000 years ago, today few plants grow in the Tablelands’ toxic soils. This barren landscape is one of the best examples of the Earth’s mantle-exposed to you, the way few have seen it.

Facilities

Discovery Centre, Woody Point (Route 431)

From this facility you can see most of the major scenic features of the national park: the Tablelands, Gros Morne Mountain, Bonne Bay, and the Lomond Peninsula. Landscaping around the facility showcases typical local wildflowers and shrubs, with a walkway entrance that leads visitors pass boulders of some of the most important rock types in the park. Awaiting visitors inside are knowledgeable staff, an art gallery with new exhibits annually and an immersive new exhibit that showcases the story of Gros Morne’s ancient landscape as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors are encouraged to watch “Holding Ground”, the National Park film, on the big screen in the 116 seat theatre. You can also do some souvenir shopping at the Tuckamore gift shop, or relax with a coffee in the comfortable lounge area while soaking in the amazing views and catching up on correspondence by connecting to the free wireless internet service.

Visitor Centre, Rocky Harbour (Route 430)

With an information desk, helpful staff, Tuckamore gift shop, backcountry registration service, a theatre to watch “Holding Ground” (the Gros Morne National Park film), and a relaxing area to connect to free wireless internet service, the Gros Morne Visitor Centre makes an informative gathering stop for your visit. In addition, exhibits showcase things to do and see along the great northern peninsula such as the Parks Canada National Historic Sites along the Viking Trail (route 430): Port au Choix, L’Anse aux Meadows and Red Bay in southern Labrador.

Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse (Main Street North, Rocky Harbour)

Step inside our century old lighthouse that once served as a beacon to safely guide fishermen and sailing vessels into Bonne Bay. Today, it is the gateway for discovering the rich cultural heritage of Gros Morne National Park. Our exhibit highlights the people and heritage of the area, showcasing historical photos, audio recordings of folk songs and lightkeepers logbooks. Take a seat at the kitchen table and chat with our friendly guides about everything from the lightkeepers families to what life is like along this coast.
