INGONISH, NOVA SCOTIA, December 8, 2021– Road crews are continuing to work around the clock to repair a washed out culvert and perform major repair work to re-establish the Cabot Trail, which has been closed since a major wind and rain storm which occurred on November 22-23, 2021.

Progress has been delayed by multiple inclement weather events, including additional rain. A major snowfall event is expected for tonight, and may impact the anticipated reopening date. However, crews are still working to reopen the route as quickly and safely as possible. The impacts are not fully known but given these factors, a delay is expected. Crews have been and will continue to work as fast and safely as possible. As promised, we will aim to provide 48-hour notice when the road is ready to reopen.

Work will continue beyond the reopening of the main roadway, and motorists should expect traffic delays until the road work is completed. Large sections of the impacted roadway may be reduced to one lane, and traffic control lights will be in place.

Road closures will remain in place until the route is re-established and conditions are safe. Visitor safety is of the utmost importance to Parks Canada; be sure to check road conditions by calling 511 or by visiting 511.gov.ns.ca. Parks Canada is committed to keeping the public informed when more information becomes available as this critical piece of work progresses. Weekly updates will be provided for the duration of the repair work.
