LOUISBOURG, NOVA SCOTIA, September 22, 2022 – In anticipation of Hurricane Fiona, Parks Canada advises visitors of site closures at the Fortress of Louisbourg and Alexander Graham Bell national historic sites, as well as Cape Breton Highlands National Park.  Parks Canada is carefully monitoring the situation and the closures will be re-assessed as appropriate. 

As a precaution, all camping accommodations in Cape Breton Highlands National Park will be closed at noon on Friday, September 23, 2022. Guests with camping reservations including the nights of September 23 through 25 will be contacted and their reservations cancelled and fees fully refunded. 

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site will be closed all day on Friday, September 23, and Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site will close at noon on Friday, September 23. Both sites will remain closed on Saturday, September 24. This closure includes the reconstructed townsite at the Fortress of Louisbourg, as well as all green spaces: Kennington Cove, Anson’s Cove, the Old Town Trail, Royal Battery, and Louisbourg Lighthouse. Additionally, the locks and swing bridge at St. Peters Canal National Historic Site will not be operational from noon on Friday, September 23, until further notice.

The Fortress of Louisbourg will remain closed on Sunday, September 25, but Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site expects to reopen on that date.  

Visitor safety is of the utmost importance for Parks Canada. This closure will remain in place until conditions are safe, and will be re-assessed as the situation progresses. Parks Canada is also carefully monitoring any possible impacts on other national parks and national historic sites in the region. Visitors are asked to contact sites directly before visiting in the coming week. Updates will also be posted via the park and sites’ social media channels, as well as on the Parks Canada website.
