Superintendent’s Orders

TRIP RESERVATION / REGISTRATION / DEREGISTRATION

Pursuant to section 6(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the Superintendent has designated the following activities hazardous: Overnight excursions in Nahanni and/or Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve(s). Subject to section 6(3) of the National Parks General Regulations, all visitors planning an overnight excursion in Nahanni and/or Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve(s) must complete a Northern Backcountry Excursion Overnight Trip Reservation Form in advance of their travel and receive confirmation of their reservation. Overnight visitors must also register in person, by e-mail, or by phone with Nahanni National Park Reserve within 24 hours of entering either park; and deregister within 24 hours of the deregistration date, as indicated on their overnight trip reservation request form. If travelling only in Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve, you may register and deregister with that park office. Note: the Overnight Trip Reservation Request Form is not your trip registration.

CUSTODIAL GROUPS

Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations the following activity is designated as prohibited: Overnight excursions in Nahanni and/or Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve(s) by Custodial Groups without a valid Custodial Permit. A Custodial Group is an institutional group where at least one person is less than 18 years of age, and that minor is not in the company of his/her parent. Institutional groups include, but are not limited to, School Groups, Scout/Guide Groups, Church Groups, Cadet Groups and Community Youth Groups.

PROHIBITIONS

Pursuant to section 7(1) of the National Parks General Regulations, the Superintendent has designated the following activities in Nahanni and Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserves as prohibited:

• Use and/or placement of soap and grey water in lakes and hot springs, and
• BASE jumping, parachuting and skydiving.

In Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve the following activities are also prohibited:

• Entry into the Zone 1 Special Preservation Area and culturally sensitive area of Mount Nááts’įhch’oh (Mount Wilson),
• Camping within 1km of Sadéé Shúh Gaǫfáá (Sunlight Mountain / Grizzly Bear Hot Spring) and Pı̨́ı̨́p'enéh łéetǫ́ǫ́ Gaǫfáá (Broken Skull Hot Spring),
• Fishing, and
• Importation of firewood.

In Nahanni National Park Reserve the following activities area also prohibited:

• Camping at Kraus Hot Springs – seasonal Closure starting August 01 every year,
• Camping at Whitespray – (day use access is permitted), and
• Stopping at Deadmen Valley Sheep Licks.

PERMIT REQUIREMENTS

A permit or licence (subject to special terms and conditions) is required, at all times of the year, prior to engaging in any of these activities throughout Nahanni and/or Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve(s):

• All travel on Howard’s Pass Access Road

• Food caching

• Filming or photography for commercial purposes

• Aircraft access including operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (known as UAVs or drones)
  
  National Parks of Canada Aircraft Access Regulations section 2(2), 5, 6
• All natural, archaeological and social science research and collection
  
  National Parks of Canada General Regulations section 7.1(2)

Additionally, permits are required in Nahanni National Park Reserve for:

• Fishing
  
  National Parks of Canada Fishing Regulations section 3(1)

 

The following do not require a separate permit, but are a condition of your registered entry in Nahanni and/or Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve(s):

Wildlife Attractants

Pursuant to section 14(g) of the National Parks of Canada Camping Regulations, park staff may inspect your campsite for unattended wildlife attractants. For safety reasons park staff will secure unattended wildlife attractants, which may include coolers, food (opened / closed), garbage, wrappings, dishes, pots, bottles, cans and any item associated with the preparations of food. If you suspect that wildlife attractants have been removed from your campsite as a result of being unattended please speak to a park staff on site.

Fires in Nahanni National Park Reserve

Pursuant to section 4(3) of the National Parks Fire Protection Regulations, fires are permitted within Nahanni National Park Reserve in fireplaces provided by the Superintendent at a designated campground, or if contained within a portable stove such as a firebox or fire pan at all locations other than designated campgrounds. Pursuant to section 12(1) and 12(2) of the National Parks General Regulations, driftwood or deadwood found on the ground may be burned as firewood. Cutting live or snag wood in Nahanni National Park Reserve is prohibited.

Fires in Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve

Pursuant to section 4(3) of the National Parks Fire Protection Regulations, fires are permitted within Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve along river corridors if contained within a portable stove such as a firebox or fire pan. Fires are prohibited within 100m of all lakes in the Park Reserve. Pursuant to section 12(1) and 12(2) of the National Parks General Regulations, driftwood or deadwood found on the ground may be burned as firewood, except at all lakes in the Park. Cutting live or snag wood in Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserve is prohibited.

Fish Offal in Nahanni National Park Reserve

Pursuant to section 26(2) of the National Parks of Canada Camping Regulations, fish offal may be disposed of in fast-moving waters of Nahanni National Park Reserve.

Important Regulations to be Aware of:

• All-terrain vehicles are not permitted in National Park Reserves (except for administration of the park and with the permission of the Superintendent).
• Over-snow vehicles are not permitted in National Park Reserves without written permission from the Superintendent.
• Motorized watercraft are prohibited in Nahanni and Nááts’įhch’oh National Park Reserves.
• No person shall hunt, disturb, hold in captivity or destroy any wildlife within, or remove any wildlife from a National Park Reserve.
