Ecological Integrity
Wood Buffalo National Park
What is Ecological Integrity?
In plain language, ecosystems have integrity when they have their native components intact, including: abiotic components (the physical elements – such as water, rocks), biodiversity (the composition and abundance of species and landscape communities in an ecosystem), and ecosystem processes (the engines that make ecosystems work – such as wildfire, flooding, predation). Parks Canada’s mandate is to enhance and restore ecological integrity while fostering public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment.
