WBNP Fire Status Dashboard
Wood Buffalo National Park
The following map displays all wildfires identified in Wood Buffalo National Park for the current fire season. Points indicate the location of the first observed hotspot for a given fire and perimeters outline the latest available estimate of area burned within the boundary of the park.
The data are derived using a combination of methods. Hotspots identified by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellites, which are compiled together by NASA’s Fire Information and Resource Management Systems (FIRMS), are used to locate areas of active fire activity. Manual delimitation of burned areas is also undertaken by trained personnel using satellite imagery taken by Sentinel 2 obtained from Sentinel Hub and Copernicus Open Access Hub Earth Observation programs. These methods are validated using ground and air-based GPS points whenever possible.
Data updates are subject to limitations due to fire activity, poor visibility due to smoke and cloud cover, constrained satellite revisit periods, resource availability as well as due to the remote nature of the park restricting ground-based observations.
