Boreal caribou genetics

Fecal and hair samples of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) collected in Pukaskwa National Park between 2005 and 2015 were analyzed for genetic markers at Trent University DNA lab. Results were compared to approximately 130 samples outside the park for similarities. Five individuals were identified from the Pukaskwa National Park samples, four of which were genetically more closely associated with the Slate Islands and Michipicoten Island populations than other mainland coastal caribou. The fifth animal seen and sampled in Pukaskwa National Park in 2015 was more closely associated with the Pic Island animals and/or Hearst animals to the north. The results suggest some connectivity through the discontinuous distribution zone between Hearst to the north and Pic Island / Pukaskwa on the coast.
