The eight-week public consultation period for the Kluane National Park and Reserve draft management plan ended November 14, 2022. We are reviewing the feedback provided for consideration in the development of the final plan. Watch this page for the release of a "What We Heard" report followed by the final management plan in 2023. Thank you for your participation!

What is a management plan?

A management plan is a forward-looking, results-based document that provides a vision of a site at its future best and the strategies for getting there. It is a broad and strategic document that identifies the desired outcome – through key goals, objectives, and targets – while providing flexibility to select the required actions over time, in response to evolving circumstances. Once finalized, this management plan will guide decisions and actions in protecting, presenting and operating Kluane National Park and Reserve over the next 10 years.

Supporting Documents

The draft plan incorporated feedback received during the preliminary consultation conducted in the spring and early summer of 2019. This feedback is reflected in the What we heard report.

The draft plan identifies several changes to zoning, following review of the 2010 management plan. The Rationale for Changes to Zoning document provides rationale for zoning changes presented in the Kluane National Park and Reserve Draft Management Plan.

Planning for the future at Kluane National Park and Reserve

A management plan provides a vision and strategic direction for the future of a national park or historic site. It guides decision making to ensure that natural and cultural features are protected, while directing appropriate use so that visitors can experience and enjoy these treasured places.

Management plans are required for all national parks and national historic sites, and must be reviewed, by law, every ten years. In cases where sites are cooperatively managed, such as Kluane National Park and Reserve, managing partners, like the Kluane National Park Management Board, play a lead role in developing and endorsing the plans.

Public consultation is an important part of the management planning process, ensuring that Canadians have opportunities to provide meaningful input on how Parks Canada places are managed. Parks Canada is in the early stages of a plan review of Kluane National Park and Reserve and is committed to providing ongoing information about the processes. Detailed newsletters and notification of public participation opportunities will follow as planning progresses.
