Kluane National Park and Reserve

Use this form to:

  • Pre-register for overnight backcountry trips in Kluane National Park and Reserve
  • You may submit a pre-registration form for overnight backcountry trips up to two weeks in advance of your start date.
  • Please submit your pre-registration at least 72 hours prior to their start date in order to be considered valid.

This pre-registration DOES NOT complete the registration process.

You still have to register, obtain and pay for your permits at the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre in Haines Junction prior to entering the park for any overnight trip. Completing a pre-registration will speed up this process.

Please note: Pre-registrations CANNOT be confirmed at the Thachä̀l Dhǟl Visitor Centre located near Kluane Lake.

It is your responsibility to learn about your trip, the challenges involved, have the right equipment, and know how to use it as well as, knowing the rules and regulations involved in the place you are going to explore to be safe and have an amazing experience.

Group type

Commercial groups must have a valid KNPR business License before starting their trip in the park.

Trip leader

The person who usually possesses the greatest knowledge, experience, training, and ability in a group. This person is Kluane National Park and Reserve’s primary contact for the group.

Emergency Contact

Important: Ensure that your emergency contact is reachable, knows your trip details, has the contact information for each group member and knows who to contact in case of an emergency: Call Parks Canada 24-hour emergency dispatch 1-780-852-3100

The emergency contact information may be used to assist Parks Canada’s team members in the event of search and rescue and/or law enforcement. For visitors outside of Canada please list a contact in Canada or the United States if possible.

Approved bear resistant food canisters are mandatory on ALL overnight trips in the Park between April 1 and November 15. Approved containers are those listed as certified by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee.

Campfires are prohibited in some areas of the park. Please check with park staff for more information when you register.

Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times within Kluane National Park and Reserve.

Please describe your route, including, planned locations for each night, and which park trail/route description you are following. You must indicate your start and end locations with corresponding dates in order for your application to be processed.

Please note: While cell phones work in Haines Junction they are out of range in almost all areas of the park.

Payment Options and Refund Policy

Backcountry Use and Camping Fees. Payment can be made by Visa®, MasterCard®, Debit or cash at the Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre located in Haines Junction.

All registrations are 100% refundable with a receipt due to poor weather, trail closures, and other unforeseen circumstances.

Annual Overnight Backcountry Passes ARE NOT refundable.

Privacy Notice

The information you provide is collected under the authority of section 8 of the Parks Canada Agency Act and the Section 7 of the General Regulations of the Canada National Parks Act for the purposes of administering the Kluane National Park and Reserve backcountry registration program and permit, including enforcement activities in KNPR.

Participation in the backcountry registration program and permit process is voluntary. Refusal to provide personal information will prevent the registration and enrolment required for you to benefit from the activities offered at Kluane National Park and Reserve.

Your personal information is administered in accordance with the Canada National Parks Act and the Privacy Act. You have the right to the protection of, access to, and correction of your personal information, which is described in Personal Information Banks: Backcountry Use Permits PC PPU 067 and High Risk Activity PC PPU 069.
