Infrastructure Program

Infrastructure work is now underway at Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site. The construction project was awarded to Groupe Atwill-Morin from Montreal, Quebec, who specializes in heritage building restoration. As part of the first phase of restoration, this portion of the project will focus on masonry work to support efforts of stabilizing the tower.

The construction is expected to continue until late December 2020. Work will involve restoring the exterior wall of the tower, stone by stone.

Heritage

Dating back from the War of 1812, Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site is a historic, complex building which presents a unique challenge in this conservation project – rehabilitating the structure while respecting the heritage character of this iconic building. Parks Canada is approaching the project with careful consideration to preserve its character-defining elements. The construction work is a part of a two-phase rehabilitation project to improve infrastructure and enhance the visitor experience at Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site.

Safety

Visitor and worker safety is a top priority for Parks Canada. While on location, members of the public are advised to exercise caution and to follow instructions from signage, staff, and contractors. While the tower itself is not accessible to visitors during these important restoration efforts, the national historic site will remain open for visitors during the regular operation season to continue exploring the Visitor Center, Exhibit Gallery and our new interactive artefact display.
