Step back in time
Port-Royal National Historic Site
Imagine a blacksmith working huge bellows amid his tools in a forge, or a craftsman turning wood on a lathe, creating tools for artisans. See a kitchen’s open-fire hearth where meals were prepared, then served on dining tables set with pewter. Store and trade rooms offer glimpses of valuable furs and European trade goods. Peek into the wine cellar, examine the herb garden and then learn about medicinal herbs.
Walking through Port-Royal’s grand doorway is like travelling back over 400 years to a remote colony. Beneath steep-pitched roofs, rooms with fieldstone fireplaces and replica period furnishings remain as they would have in this fur trading settlement. Ask costumed interpreters who represent the artisans, and Mi’kmaq who lived off this land, details about their historical clothing, and hear their stories. Then try your hand at the lathe or beating the Mi’kmaw drum.
Enjoy a unique cultural immersion, and connect with history.
