National Addictions Awareness Week - Mending intergenerational knowledge transfer through hope, learning, and exchange
In November 2021 Sahtúgot’ı̨nę Elders, community members, land guardians, and students from ʔEhtseo Ayha School gathered together at the Cultural Camp, for National Addictions Awareness Week, part of a larger community event in Délı̨nę.
The weeklong event included storytelling in Dene Kǝde, traditional medicines, clothing, and food demonstrations, as well as traditional snowshoe repair demonstrations led by Elders and community knowledge holders. At the end of each afternoon participants enjoyed a feast of moose meat stew, bannock, freshly caught fried fish, salads, and desserts.
“Our hope is that by bringing together community members, especially the Youth and the Elders, this learning and exchange will help facilitate the much needed mending of the intergenerational knowledge transfer that was disrupted by our recent, intense, and traumatic Colonial history.”
- Mandy Bayha, Director of Culture, Language, and Spirituality Department, Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government [2021]
The community of Délı̨nę will continue to use the space that the Cultural Camp provides for years to come – helping to foster traditional practices, building community strength and resilience, and telling stories about themselves and the land that is them.
