Off Season on the Rideau Canal

Rideau Canal National Historic Site

Important Notice:

The historic site is closed to the public from October 15 to May 15 and is not maintained during this period.

There are significant risks of falls due to uneven surfaces, snow, ice, and slippery areas near water and structures. Visitors use the site at their own risk.

For public safety, unauthorized activities such as walking, skating, or ice bathing on the frozen or unfrozen waters of the Rideau Canal are prohibited. Violators may face charges under the Historic Canals Regulations.

Ice Skating on the Rideau Canal is permitted only in designated areas when the National Capital Commission (NCC) declares conditions safe. Please check their website for updates.

Parks Canada assumes no liability for injury, death, or damage to anyone using the site while it is closed.

During the non-navigation season, aids to navigation may be missing, off-station, or inoperable until next spring.
